BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY
Pátzcuaro is a city with enormous importance within the historical development of Michoacán.  Its name means place of cúes, indigenous temples. It was center and root of the purépecha empire, that consolidated during the time of Tariácuri. His governor dead, Pátzcuaro became a district of the kingdom of Tzintzuntzan (Michoacán)
and a place of recreation for the indigenous nobility. With the arrival of Don Vasco de Quiroga to michoacanas lands in 16th century, the population recovered its former importance. In 1540 they designate it Episcopal Seat, and in 1544 they name it city capital.
In 1541, the first school of the State was built : San Nicholas, for the instruction of Spaniards, mestizos and indigenas.
The Spanish families and the religious congregations that populated this organization, raised mansions, churches and convents, and with them the architecture of the city bloomed. In the ill-fated days of the fight for Independence, Pátzcuaro had its bastions in Don Manuel of Torre Lloreda and Doña Gertrudis Bocanegra de Lazo de la Vega. The First, one was valiant insurgent priest who arrived at constituent deputy of the Congress of Michoacán and a notable épico poet ;  the second, an heroina who suffered, in this fight, the loss of its husband and his son, and still gave her own life, to obtain a so longed-for freedom.
Another patzcuarense martyr of this war, was Bernardo Abarca, rebellious lieutenant colonel shot by Iturbide. At the time of the Reformation and the American intervention, general Manuel García Pueblita, son of this city attracted attention by his value.Pátzcuaro, through the years, has given poets, writers, musicians, scientists and
politicians, who thanks to their commendable works have obtainedan ample recognition.
